This Open-File Report consists of a presentation given in Crested Butte, Colorado on December 13, 2007 to the Standard Mine Advisory Group. The presentation was paired with another presentation given by the Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining, and Safety on the physical features and geology of the Standard Mine. The presentation in this Open-File Report summarizes the results and conclusions of a hydrogeochemical investigation of the Standard Mine performed by the U.S. Geological Survey (Manning and others, in press). The purpose of the investigation was to aid the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in evaluating remediation options for the Standard Mine site. Additional details and supporting data related to the information in this presentation can be found in Manning and others (in press).

The report covers a geothermal system and calculated aquifer transmissivities in the Boise Warm Springs Water District portion of the geothermal system range from 3500-25,000 gals/day/ft. Withdrawals during the 1984-1985 heating season stabilized drawdown at the pumpbowls and water levels approached stability in observation wells as distant as 1675 ft (507.6m). In the near steady-state condition, recharge, and water from storage beyond the observation wells provided a maximum Q of 840 gpm.

Metropolitan Water District (MWD) of southern California and Cadiz Inc. investigated the feasibility of storing Colorado River water in groundwater aquifers of the eastern Mojave Desert as a future drought mitigation strategy. This culminated in the public release of the Cadiz Groundwater Storage and Dry-Year Supply Program Draft EIR, which included pilot percolation studies, groundwater modeling, and precipitation/runoff analysis in the Fenner groundwater basin, which overlies the proposed storage site. The project proposes to store and withdrawal Colorado River water over a 50-year period, but will not exceed the natural replenishment rates of the groundwater basin. Several independent analyses were conducted to estimate the rates of natural groundwater replenishment to the Fenner Groundwater Basin, which was included in the Draft EIR.

Groundwater conditions in Brunswick County, North Carolina, have been monitored continuously since 2000 through the operation and maintenance of groundwater-level observation wells in the surficial, Castle Hayne, and Peedee aquifers of the North Atlantic Coastal Plain aquifer system. Groundwater-resource conditions for the Brunswick County area were evaluated by relating the normal range (25th to 75th percentile) monthly mean groundwater-level and precipitation data for water years 2001 to 2008 to median monthly mean groundwater levels and monthly sum of daily precipitation for water year 20081. Summaries of precipitation and groundwater conditions for the Brunswick County area and hydrographs and statistics of continuous groundwater levels collected during the 2008 water year are presented in this report. Ground-water levels varied by aquifer and geographic location within Brunswick County, but were influenced by drought conditions and groundwater withdrawals. Water levels were normal in two of the eight observation wells and below normal in the remaining six wells. Seasonal Kendall trend analysis performed on more than 9 years of monthly mean groundwater-level data collected in an observation well located within the Brunswick County well field indicated there is a strong downward trend, with water levels declining at a rate of about 2.2 feet per year.

The purpose of this report is to describe the (1) calculation of a daily water budget to estimate average annual ground-water recharge for 1990's land-use conditions in the Hawi area of the island of Hawaii, (2) uncertainty in the recharge estimate, and (3) results from numerical ground-water flow models that simulate the hydrologic effects of additional ground-water withdrawals at rates between 10 and 20 million gallons per day (Mgal/d) above average 1990's rates. No new data were collected as part of this study; only existing information was used to compute the water budget. An exist-ing numerical ground-water flow model (Underwood and others, 1995) formed the basis for models used in this study to simulate the effects of additional withdrawals.

The consequences were examined of possible future large-scale groundwater withdrawals from Cienega Basin, located about 40 miles southeast of Tucson, Az. Average annual recharge to groundwater calculated by an infiltration method is 19,500 acre-feet; calculated by a salt balance method it is about 15,700 acre-feet; calculated by model calibration it is about 10,700 acre-feet. Model studies show that if future pumpage is 14,000 acre-feet/year, and assuming a storage coeff. of 0.01, at the end of 20 years the cone of depression will affect virtually the entire basin and encroach on adjoining basins.

The BSW series wells are located in the Mixed Waste Management Facility and are part of the groundwater monitoring program at Savannah River Site. These wells have had persistent problems that prevent successful sampling that dates back to their installation. Only thirty-two of the fifty-three BSW wells were successfully sampled during 4th quarter, 2001. These problems were previously investigated by looking at field sampling logbooks from 4th quarter 2001 and other background information to try to identify causes for the high rate of sampling failure. Several possible causes were identified and reported in memorandum, SRT-EST-2002-00059. The memorandum recommended that an evaluation be performed on each well to identify problems and their causes and to correct them when possible. Environmental Restoration Division followed up on this recommendation and requested Savannah River Technology Center to perform an evaluation. This report includes the results of the evaluation performed on the BSW wells.

Ongoing data collection in an established well network in Windham, Maine, serves as an indicator of the hydrologic and water-quality conditions in the aquifer. This report presents data collected from 1997 through 2001, including ground-water levels, measurements of water-quality field parameters, and concentrations of nutrients and arsenic.

This pilot project presents 14C groundwater ages in the Black Creek and Upper Cape Fear aquifers of the North Carolina Coastal Plain, an evaluation of the relationship between He concentration and groundwater age, and H concentrations in groundwater. Groundwater samples were collected with a positive-displacement Bennett pump from 7 wells that lie along a trend roughly; parallel to groundwater flow (at least, predevelopment groundwater flow). 14C, 13C, DIC,:DOC, He, Ne,.Ar, N(sub 2), O(sub 2), CO2, CH4, H2, (sup 3)H, S, Fe, Al, Mn, Si, Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg 2+, Cl-, SO4-, and NO3- were measured in all samples. Estimation of groundwater age involved inverse mass balance modeling with NETPATH to account for geochemical reactions (calcite dissolution, organic matter oxidation, and cation exchange) affecting 14C activity in groundwater.
